1. SAFETY STIRRUPS description
We machine each side from a single block of aircraft-grade aluminium, then hard-anodise it so the colour can't flake off in the wash rack. The tread plate is 304 stainless – the same stuff yacht fittings are made from – so it will still look clean after years of wet lessons.
A ring of holes is drilled right through the floor of the stirrup; mud and arena sand fall straight out instead of turning into ball-bearings under your boot. The release tab sits a finger-width above the tread, so you can't hit it by accident, yet a quick upward tug pops your foot free. The hinge is up top, out of the dirt, so it works even when the stirrup is packed with snow or sawdust.
The tread is tilted five degrees – about the angle of a relaxed ankle – so your knee and hip sit in line without you thinking about it. Most riders feel the difference the first circuit: less pull on the inside ligament, more bend in the ankle joint.
