What is Horse Bits?

A horse bit is a piece of equipment that fits inside a horse's mouth and is used by the rider to communicate with and control the horse. Here's a breakdown of its types and function:

Function:

Communication: The bit acts as a point of communication between the rider's hands and the horse's mouth. By applying gentle pressure on the reins (connected to the bit), the rider can send signals to the horse about direction, speed, and gait (walking, trotting, etc.).

Control: The bit provides the rider with a controlled way to guide the horse. Different bit designs offer varying degrees of leverage depending on the horse's training level and riding discipline.

Choosing the Right Bit:

The appropriate bit selection depends on several factors:

Horse's Training Level: A well-trained horse might require a less restrictive bit compared to a horse in training.

Riding Discipline: Different disciplines have their preferred bit styles based on the level of control needed.

Horse's Mouth Conformation: The size and shape of the horse's mouth should be considered to ensure a comfortable fit.

Remember: A bit is a tool, and using the right bit with proper technique is crucial for effective communication and a harmonious relationship between horse and rider.

What are the best materials for snaffle bits?

Snaffles made of metal have a long tradition. Today, copper, iron or stainless steel are often used to make snaffle bits. Copper and iron have the advantage that they react with the horse's saliva. This gives the bit a pleasant taste for the animal. However, copper in its pure form is too soft. It is therefore usually used together with other metals. This addition of copper also causes the bit to warm up faster to the horse's body temperature in winter. Stainless steel snaffles are very smooth, durable and easy to clean.

Plastic snaffles consist of a wire core and a coating of Nathe. This synthetic material is very soft. On the one hand this is pleasant for the horse, but on the other hand it shortens the life of the bridle. This is why you have to check plastic snaffles regularly. If the Nathe gets bitten through, the wire core is exposed, which can lead to serious injuries in the horse's mouth.

Which snaffle bit is best?

The choice is huge - there are snaffle bits made of a wide variety of materials and in different shapes. Which snaffle is best for you depends on your horse's anatomy, temperament and habits. An anatomically shaped, double-jointed water snaffle usually encourages horses to chew more, so if your horse doesn't chew enough, this snaffle may be optimal. On the other hand, if your horse already chews a lot, it might just play with this snaffle and not accept the aids. In that case, a single bridle would probably make more sense. However, this type of snaffle is not suitable if your horse likes to lean on the bit.

Most horses accept a single bit, anatomically shaped eggbutt snaffle very well. It lies very comfortably in the horse's mouth. But even this snaffle is not well suited for horses that tend to push against the hand. In this case, a double jointed version would be better.

Western Bits And Bit Guards

Improve Your Communication With Your Horse.

It takes time to learn to communicate effectively with your horse. Your communication will improve immensely when you purchase western bits and bit guards from Qingdao Bothfine collection. Choose the bit that best suits your needs, along with the necessary curb straps and bit guards to make your next training session easy and fun.

Order the Western SS Low Port Futurity Bit for an antique stainless steel curb bit that does not bend in all directions compared to a snaffle bit. This bit has a center cylinder that allows either side to turn clockwise or counterclockwise.

For horses that prefer snaffle bits, select the Myler SS 5 HBT Shank Low Port Comfort Snaffle. This bit has a stainless steel 5" HBT hank with a Sweet Iron low port comfort snaffle and a 4 3/4" copper inlay mouth. This mouthpiece is made of polished Sweet Iron which naturally oxidizes or rusts making it harmless to horses. It has a sweet taste and promotes salivation too.

Whether you’re casually riding or competing, Qingdao Bothfine has the best selection of bits for your horse. Choose from hackamore bits, snaffle bits, and gag bits that each have their specific function and role.

BIT OF ANISSUE? A BIT OF HELP…
Bitting can be a confusing and bemusing subject and opinions and ideas will always vary. The bit and bridle are tools used by the rider to communicate with the horse.
A clear understanding of the bitting pressure points, how the diferent families of bitting use these, and the resulting reaction by the horse can greatly benefit the rider. However, it is the signals the rider gives the horse through the reins that will ultimately define how strong or severe a bit is, not just it’s design.
If in doubt, it is recommended the rider seek the advice of their instructor when looking for the most suitable bit for themselves and their horse.

THE FAMILIES OF BITTING
There are many diferent designs of bit but they can almost all be placed into one of six families of bitting, each defined by how the mechanics (action) of the bit works, the pressure points that it uses and the probable reaction of the horse. In this way a logical process can be followed when selecting a bit for your horse.
Remember that your horse’s conformation, age, stage of training, work, stable management and your ability as a rider are all contributing factors to correct bit selection.

Fit is key to a happy and responsive horse

It is not just the mouthpiece that changes size for a
smaller or larger bit, the ring and cheek* size can vary
according to the mouthpiece size too. These sizes are
indicated as measurements A or B at the end of the bit
descriptions which correspond to the diagram above.

The mouthpiece is measured between the inner ring
hole edges as shown as C in the diagram. For the correct
height a straight bar bit should sit neatly into the corners
of the mouth and ajointed onejust high enough to create
gentle wrinkles.

TO MEASURE YOUR HORSE FOR A BIT

1.It is important  that a bit is the correct width.
Too wide will
cause bruising and trauma, too narrow and it will pinch.
For the correct mouthpiece width there should be a ¼
inch (5mm) clear on both sides. And index finger placed
on each sideis a good measure of the appropriate width.

2.With the bit at the correct height, place a gentle contact
on both reins and then look from the front to judge the
protruding mouthpiece width. For safety’s sake, keep
your face to one side in case he suddenly lifts his head
up. With a loose ring bit, take the measurement from
the inside of the whole through which the ring passes.
Seek professional advice if you are unsure.

Routine Mouth Care:
Make it part of your horse’s stable management routine
to have his teeth checked regularly by a good Equine
Dental Technician or Vet. Ask them to show you how to
part your horse’s lips and look at his mouth and bars
after active work as this will enable you to be aware of
bitting problems before they become issues.
N.B. Do not put your fingers inside your horse’s mouth!

For a long life, and your horse’s welfare, wash the bit
after every use, checking it’s condition and dry it with a
clean towel. Store in a dry environment.
Keep a close eye on your bridle and look out for
stitching, loops, clips or buckles that may be in
need of repair.

FAQ

01.What is the purchase on a horse bit?

A Bit's 5 Structure Points Starting at the top, the distance from the bit's top ring to the butt of the mouthpiece is referred to as the purchase. This distance affects the placement of the curb strap on the horse's chin.

02.What is the most popular horse bit?

Snaffle Bits (french links and jointed) The snaffle bit is one of the most common amongst horse bridle bits. ...

Eggbutt Bits. ...

Full cheek Bits. ...

Dutch Gag Bit. ...

D Bits. ...

Pelham Bit. ...

Kimblewick Bits. ...

Weymouth Bits.

03.What is the best first bit for a horse?

It is difficult to guess what kind of pressure the horse prefers. Our general recommendation is to start with a tongue relief bit. Another good idea is to choose a non-metal option as it is more familiar than a metal mouthpiece.

04.Is a rusty bit bad for a horse?

So if you see a little rust on your sweet iron bit don't worry! You can still take the time to wipe it clean and dry it before hanging it back up, but the rust is completely normal and your horse may even like it!

05.Why is it called a snaffle bit?

The term snaffle bit does not relate to the mouth piece being “broken” in the center. The term has to do with the fact that the bit has no leverage and exerts direct pressure on the side of the horse's mouth, and are very useful to encourage lateral flexion.

06.Why use a full cheek snaffle bit?

The Action of the Full Cheek
This reinforces the turning aids and providing the mouthpiece is the correct size (snug fit) will not allow the mouthpiece to slide back and forth across the tongue and bars thus reducing friction.
