**Egg-Butt Snaffle – Plain-Ring Stability**

If you're breaking a two-year-old or fine-tuning a school-master that hates a busy mouth, start with an egg-butt snaffle. The cheeks are forged into flat, oval "eggs" that keep the single-jointed mouth-piece dead-centre; no sliding, no pinching, no surprises. Rings swivel fore and aft, so the bit follows the horse's movement without dragging on the lips, yet the vertical position stays locked unless your hand moves. Pick up the rein and the cue is instant-no lag, no clatter, just a direct line from elbow to corner of the mouth.

We make these from 18 mm sweet-iron bar that rusts gently, encouraging saliva and a softer jaw. The joints are hand-brazed, then filed flush so there's no ridge to bruise the tongue. Eggs are 7 cm top-to-bottom, giving plenty of purchase for a keeper Fulmer or a plain cavesson. At 400 g per pair they're light enough for ponies but stout enough for a 17-hand hunter. Stainless-steel rings won't blue in the wash rack, and the mouthpiece is left un-plated so it tastes like iron, not nickel.

Use it on babies during lunge lessons, on fox-hunters that need a steady half-halt, or on anything that's learned to duck behind a loose-ring. When the horse graduates, hang it on the tack-room wall; chances are you'll pull it out again for the next youngster. Simple, honest, and still the first bit most good horsemen reach for.
